Subhash Sachdeva had won the seat in a byelection in 2004 by defeating Ram Maggo of the Congresss by a margin of 9,977 votes. The byelection was necessitated due to the incumbent MLA Madan Lal Khurana's resignation following his appointment as the governor of Rajatshan.

Madan Lal Khurana, the first BJP Chief Minister of Delhi, had emerged victorius from the Moti Nagar seat in 2003 general assembly electios to delhi by defeating the Congresss candidate Alka Lamba by a marin of 15,190 votes. In the first elections to Delhi legislative assembly in 1993, Moti Nagar went in favour of Madan Lal Khurana. He did not contest the next election in 1998 because he was embroiled in the Jain Havala case. In his place his protégé Avinash Sahani coested the seat and won by defeating Kanwaljit Singh of the Congresss by a margin of 3,309 votes.

Moti Nagar is one of the ten assembly constituencies that unite to form the parliamentary constituency of New Delhi which is currently represented by Meenakshi Lekhi of the BJP who won the seat by defeating his nearest AAP rival Ashish Khetan by a margin of 1,62,708 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
