Delhi Election Results 2015 - Shalimar Bagh

Winner Runnerup
Bandana Kumari (AAP) Rekha Gupta (BJP )

Shalimar Bagh is one of the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi. Bandana Kumari (AAP) has won the Assembly election 2015, got 62,656 votes against Rekha Gupta of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who has 51,678 votes.

Votes polled on Feb 7 and the results was announced on Feb 10, 2015.

The stranglehold of the BJP on the assembly constituency was broken when in 2013 it had elected the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Bandana Kumari who defeated the sitting BJP MLA Ravinder Nath Bansal by a good margin of 10,651 votes. While Bandana Kumari, who has again been given ticket by the AAP to contest the upcoming Delhi assembly elections in 2015, polled 47,235 votes, the three- time BJP MLA Ravinder Nath Bansal secured 36,584 votes.

Bandana Kumari was one of the three women MLAs who made it to the legislative assembly of Delhi in 2013. All the three belonged to the AAP. Naresh Kumar Gupta, who entered the fray as a nominee of the Congress, came third with 15,659 votes.

Ravinder Nath Bansal made a hat-trick of wins in 2008 when he emerged victorious from the seat by defeating Ram Kailash Gupta of the Congress by an impressive margin of 19932 votes. In the previous assembly elections held in 2003, he claimed the seat by defeating B S Walia of the Congress by 6,884 votes in a direct fight. In 1998 he became the winner by virtues of his win over the Congress nominee Sarla Kaushik by a margin of 10,005 votes.

In the first elections to the Delhi legislative assembly held in 1993, which resulted in the installation of the BJP government headed by Madan Lal Khurana, Shalimar Bagh went in favour of Sahib Singh Verma who became the second BJP Chief Minister in Delhi after Madan Lal Khurana's resignation. In that election, Sahib Singh Verma, who was also a Union minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, polled 40,077 votes to defeat the Congress candidate S C Vats by a massive margin of 21,770 votes. His son, Parvesh Verma, who was elected from the Mehrauli assembly constituency in 2013, is the current BJP Lok Sabha MP from West Delhi parliamentary constituency.

Shalimar Bagh is one of the ten assembly constituencies that unite to form the parliamentary constituency of Chandni Chowk which is currently represented by Dr. Harsh Vardhan of the BJP who won the seat by defeating his nearest AAP rival Ashutosh by a margin of 1,36,320 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
