Babbar had trounced the Congress candidate Dr Anita Babbar by a margin of 12118 votes. in the previous assembly elections held in 2003, O. P. Babbar had emerged victorious from the seat by defeating the sitting Congress MLA Jaspal Singh who had defeated him in 1998.

In the first elections to the Delhi legislative assembly held in 1993, which resulted in the formation of Madan Lal Khurana led BJP government in Delhi, Tilak Nagar went in favour of O. P. Babbar who defeated Tervinder Singh Marwah of the Congress by an impressive margin of 16570 votes. O. P. Babbar polled 33911 votes, Tervinder Singh Marwah received 17341 votes.
