Bengal Pollution Board to provide sound monitors to police

Kolkata, Aug 30 (IANS) The West Bengal Pollution Control Board is providing over 700 sound monitors to the police in Kolkata as well as other districts to help them curb noise pollution, an official said on Wednesday.

"We have procured these devices and supplying it to the police in Kolkata, Howrah and other districts so that they can monitor the noise levels regularly," West Bengal Pollution Control Board chairperson Kalyan Rudra told IANS.

He said the drive is being kicked-off ahead of the festive season to ensure compliance with regard to decibel limits.

"Often the police personnel on ground are unable to judge whether sound levels have crossed thresholds or not and so the hand-held monitors will help them to check that. If they see decibels have exceeded the limit (say for firecrackers, loudspeakers etc) then they can take action," Rudra said, adding each device costs around Rs 7,000.
