Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of West Bengal since 2011. She is the first woman to hold the office. In 1997, Mamata Banerjee left the Congress Party and established the All India Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. She is the chairperson of the Trinamool Congress party.

In 2011 Banerjee created history when the TMC -Congress alliance pulled off a landslide victory defeating the 34-year old CPI (M)-led Left Front government.

One of her first decisions in 2011 as Chief Minister was to return 400 acres of land to Singur farmers as she had opposed forceful acquisition of land by the then communist government to create Special Economic Zone in West Bengal. In November 2006, Banerjee had led a agitation against a proposed Tata Motors car project at Singur.

In the 1984 general election, Banerjee became one of India's youngest parliamentarians ever, beating veteran Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee. She has been MP from the Kolkata South seat in the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 in general elections.

Mamata Banerjee held several posts in the cabinet of various governments. She twice held the pot of the Minister of Railways. She was Minister of Coal, and Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and Women and Child Development etc.

As a minister in Union cabinet she was vociferous supporter of the Women's Reservation Bill. On 11 December 1998, she controversially held a Samajwadi Party MP, Daroga Prasad Saroj, by the collar and dragged him out of the well of the Lok Sabha to prevent him from protesting against the Women's Reservation Bill.

As a first woman railway minister she started women-only local trains for office going women in several cities of India. She also introduced a number of non-stop Duronto Express trains connecting large Indian cities.

Mamata Banerjee is opposed to allow FDI in retail markets. She is also against hike of petrol diesel prices and wants them to be state controlled. She has threatened to withdraw support from in protest of these issues.

As Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has initiated various reforms in education and health sectors. This includes release of the monthly pay of the teachers on the first of every month and quicker pensions for retiring teachers. In health sector a three-phase developmental system is taken up to improve the heath infrastructure and service. Mamata Banerjee is credited for achieving a full year without any reported cases of polio in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee is against calling bandhs (work stoppage) but she had called many of them when she was in opposition. The episode of Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi's resignation and Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra cartoon incident has made her critique call her of being a dictator.

Mamata Banerjee stormed out off the stage in a huff during a TV interview on 18 May 2012 at the Kolkata Town Hall, without answering questions from students whom she alleged were Maoist cadres.

She drew flak from people when a 20-year-old college student was allegedly gangraped and murdered in 2013 at Barasat district, 24 Parganas. She was forced to flee from the meeting called there when a mob tried to assault her. Later she described the Barasat rapists and protesters as CPM workers.

Mamata Banerjee is a self-taught painter and a poet. Throughout her political life she has maintained an austere lifestyle. She always dresses in simple traditional Bengali cotton sarees and never wears any cosmetics or jewellery. She has remained single throughout her life.
