Mayawati is the head of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). This party was founded by dalit leader Kanshi Ram in 1984. BSP strives for the welfare of the weakest section of the society. Its primary support base is Dalits, OBC, and religious minorities. The BSP symbol is elephant which is touted which is touted by the BSP supporters as Lord Ganesha.

Mayawati is the member of BSP since 1984. Since then she has seen a meteoric rise in her political career and personal fortunes. She was elected to Parliament in 1989. In 2001 Kanshi Ram named her as his successor to the party leadership. After the death of Kanshi Ram in 2006, Myawati has become the Chairperson of the BSP.

Mayawati primary focus is to improve the situation of Dalits and other disadvantaged groups through affirmative action. She advocates reservation for the dalits and other disadvantaged section of the society.

Mayawati is for the formation of smaller states for good governance and speedy development. On 15 November 2011, her cabinet approved partitioning Uttar Pradesh into four different states for better administration and governance.

During her tenure as Chief Minister Mayawati has seen the completion of several dream projects. These include; Manvyar Shri Kanshi Ramji Green (Eco) Garden in March 2011. The Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal in October 2011. The Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Sthal opened in 2012. She is reported to have spent over INR 2,500 crore on these projects.

Mayawati was suspected of financial irregularities in the Taj Heritage Corridor project. The CBI had raided her residences and uncovered evidence of assets disproportionate to her known source of income. However, this case was effectively dropped even before going to the trial court.

Mayawati is accused of mismanaging the World Bank loaned funds for developmental projects in UP. The World Bank has alleged that she put the project behind schedule by transferring project managers and suspected her of corruption. Myawati took remedial measures after that but the World Bank continued to criticise her of wrong doings.

Mayawati is reported to posses several properties in her name. Her assets have been growing steadily since 1984 when she joined the BSP. In the year 2007–08, Mayawati paid an income tax of whopping 26 crore rupees. In March 2012 while filing her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha, Mayawati revealed her assets to be worth INR 111.26 crore. Flaying her critics on her assets, Mayawati has asserted that her income comes from gifts and small contributions made by the party workers and her supporters. A disproportionate assets case that was filed against her by the CBI was finally dropped due to lack evidence in October 2013.

Mayawati aspires to become the Prime Minister of India. She has once commented that when the political conditions enable her to become Prime Minister of the country she will formally convert to Buddhism.
