Narendra Modi is the incumbent Prime Minister of India. He has served four consecutive terms as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 2014 general elections.

Modi is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and media describes him as a Hindu nationalist. In the first term as Chief Minister (2001-2002) Modi projected himself as a firebrand Hindu leader. The year 2002, saw the Godhara train tragedy in which many Hindu pilgrims perished. The anti Muslim riots in Gujarat that followed it were blamed on Modi. In 2005, Modi was denied a diplomatic visa to the United States for violations of religious freedom. This ban remains valid till today.

Modi's emphasis shifted from Hindutva to the economic development during his second term as Chief Minister (2002–2007). His idea of governance revolves around privatisation and Foreign Direct Investment. Modi is praised for his economic policies that have resulted in the high rate of economic growth in Gujarat.

Gujarat recorded a compounded annual growth rate of 10.97%, the highest among all Indian states, for the decade 2001–2010. The changes brought out by Modi have led to Gujarat becoming an attractive investment destination. During the Vibrant Gujarat summit in 2007, real estate investment deals worth INR6.6 trillion were signed.

Modi holds very strong views on terrorism. He has justified encounter killings to neutralize the terrorists. Several times he had demanded the hanging of Afzal Guru the life convict in Parliament attack case.

In order to protect Gujarat's 1,600 km long coastline from terrorists, Modi has succeeded in procuring 30 high–speed surveillance boats from the central government.

Modi is the first Indian politician to interact with netizens through live chat on the internet. The hashtag #ModiHangout became the most trending term in India at Twitter.

In the three opinion polls conducted by news agencies and magazines, Modi was declared the preferred choice for the post as Prime Minister in the 2014 general elections.
