Mulayam Singh Yadav

Mulayam Singh Yadav is the member of the 15th Lok Sabha and the chairman of the Samajwadi party. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice; first during 1989–91 second from 1993–95 and third time from 2003-2007. He also served as Minister of Defence from 1996–98.

Prior to entering politics, Jayalalithaa was a popular film star in south Indian cinema. She acted as a heroine in over 140 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi language films.

Mulayam was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in 1967. Since then he served eight terms there. He founded the Samajwadi Party (Socialist Party) in 1992.

The Samajwadi party has socialist ideas of uplifting rural society. Mulayam is staunch supporter of Raj Narayan who defeated Indira Gandhi in 1997 general elections. He also follows Rammanohar Lohia's ideas of socialism that based on caste instead of class.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's rise in Indian politics is a result of two startling features of Indian politics; both had its base in Uttar Pradesh. One was the Ayodhya movement and the other was implementation of the Mandal Commission report.

Mulayam's staunch anti communal stand and pro backward castes approach struck a cordial cord with the masses that belonged to these groups. Mulayam's craft of weaving of a political matrix based on Muslim and other backward caste alliance launched him on the national stage.

Mulayam Singh Yadav as the UP Chief Minister in 1990 earned him the title 'Mulla Mulayam' and the unflinching loyalty of UP Muslims when ordered firing in Ayodhya to save the Babri mosque. He in 2009 went on to have alliance with Kalyan Singh, under whose tenure as Chief Minister, the mosque was demolished in 1992.

Mulayam stand on movement for demanding separate statehood for Uttarakhand also became controversial when he ordered firing on Uttarakhand activists at Muzaffarnagar on 2 October 1994.

Mulayam voiced his support to the UPA government that was on the brink of defeat and helped the safe passing the Indo- US civilian nuclear bill in the Parliament. The Indo-U.S. nuclear deal in 2008 saw a crucial vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha. With the UPA ally, the left parties opposing the deal it was imminent that Manmohan Singh's government may fall, when Mulayam extended support and salvaged the situation.

Mulayam's association with Amar Singh, the erstwhile general secretary of the Samajwadi party has attracted a huge media attention. Amar Singh press management helped Mulayam's popularity reach dazzling heights. Later difference arose and Mulyam had to sack his long term associate. Amar Singh, while parting ways reportedly said that he is in know of Mulayam's secrets and if he reveals them the Samajwadi party leader may go to jail. He added that he will not do so and rather will die with them.

Mulayam Singh and other members of his family have been accused of having assets disproportionate to their income. There has been a court-ordered enquiry by the CBI on this issue. The matter remains sub-judice. His family members claim that the allegations are politically motivated.

The third front which has come up in the run up to the 2014 General election with the idea to capture the non-Congress, non-BJP electoral space has eleven parties alliance where Mulayam is a serious contender for the post of Prime Minister. If he is able to deliver forty Lok Sabha seats and this front emerge as the largest political formation Mulayam is likely to be the Prime Minister of India, a dream that he nurses, when VP Singh and Chandrashekar assumed that post.
