Rahul Gandhi is the Vice President of the Indian National Congress and second in command of the party. Rahul Gandhi is seen as a youth icon of India. He entered politics in 2004 but assumed official posts since 2007.

Under his leadership the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) has seen a dramatic increase in membership. Its members rose from two lakhs in 2007 to twenty five lakhs in 2011.

Rahul Gandhi led an agitation in support of the farmers of in Uttar Pradesh demanding more compensation for their land being acquired for a highway project. He was arrested on 11 May 2011 at Bhatta Parsaul village in UP.

Rahul Gandhi holds a wide range of political views. He sees himself as a uniting force who likes to reduce caste and religious tensions in the country. He hates divisive politics and is of the opinion that Hindu extremists pose a greater threat to the country than Muslim militants. He has specifically mentioned the polarising figures in the Bharatiya Janata Party. Rahul Gandhi is equally critical of Muslim extremism saying there was evidence of support among certain Indian Muslims for some Islamist militant organisation.

Rahul Gandhi holds the view that the Lokpal should be made a constitutional body and just like the Election Commission it should be made accountable to the Parliament. He feels that Lokpal alone cannot root out corruption.

Rahul Gandhi shocked the nation on September 27, 2013, when he openly criticized the UPA government for coming out with an ordinance to undo the Supreme Court order that bared convicted persons from contesting election.

Rahul Gandhi also publicly rebuked the Congress government in Maharashtra for rejecting a report on Adarsh Housing society scam. In a recent interview Rahul Gandhi said that "some Congressmen were probably involved" in the anti-Sikh riots in 1984. This statement has sparked controversy.
