All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is a regional political party that is currently ruling in Tamil Nadu.

M.G. Ramachandran, a veteran Tamil film star founded this party in 1972, breaking away from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). J. Jayalalitha, the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is heading AIADMK since 1989.

    All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam History

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is a regional political party that is currently ruling in Tamil Nadu. M.G. Ramachandran, a veteran Tamil film star founded this party in 1972, breaking away from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). J. Jayalalitha, the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is heading AIADMK since 1989.

The Election symbol of the AIADMK is two leaves. The party had come to power in Tamil Nadu six times.

Main leaders of the AIADMK

The most prominent leader of AIADM is Jayalalithaa Jayaram, who is the President and General Secretary of the party. She has been Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for four terms. She held the membership of the Rajya Sabha during 1984 to1989.

Another powerful leader of AIADMK is Ponnusamy Venugopal, the Secretary of the Medical Wing of party and a member of the 15thLok Sabha from the Thiruvallur constituency. C. Rajendran, is a member of the 15thLok Sabha from the Chennai South. S. Semmalai, is MP from the Salem. P. Kumar,MP from Tiruchirapalli. C. Sivasami, MP from Tiruppur.

Historical Backgroud

AIADMK split from the DMK in 1972 and succeeded in politically establishing in Tamil Nadu. After MGR era that ended in 1987, Jayalalithaa established AIADMK's position in the state.
Jayalalitha has taken many decisions such as prohibition of lottery tickets, control the liquor and sand quarrying business to government agencies and proscription tobacco product sales near schools and colleges. She promoted women to join the state police force by establishing all women police stations and commissioning 150 women into the elite level police commandos in 2003. Jayalalithaa sent a special task force to the Satyamangalam forests in October 2004 to hunt down notorious sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. The operation was triumphant and Veerappan was killed in 2004.

Under the leadership of Jayalalithaa in state, AIADMK has expanded beyond Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and state units have been established in the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. AIADMK has followers in other states such as Mumbai and Delhi as well.

Views of AIADMK

The AIDMK is opposed to the anti-Hindi and anti-Brahman position of the DMK party. Top leader of AIADMK have always stated that they would counter racial exclusion and never prefer the anti-Brahminism stand of the DMK.

The AIDMK also disagreed with DMK on keeping the medium of education in Tamil language. AIDMK has pro poor approach and flags the issues of fishermen and farmers.

Major accomplishments of Party

The AIADMK has initiated various policies to assist farmers, SC/ST/OBCs, pregnant women, teachers, handloom weavers and physically challenged individuals. The AIADMK commenced the allotment of bio-pesticides, certified seeds, soil health cards, and gypsum to farmers. It initiated urban cooperative banks for self-help groups, maternity loans during pregnancy as well as the delivery of the child. It has introduced the Nutrition-integrated Child Development Service Scheme, the National Teachers Welfare Fund. On the whole there is an impeccable record of the AIDMK towards the social welfare of the people.
