About Asom Gana Parishad

   Asom Gana Parishad History

Asom Gana Parishad, also known as Assam Peoples Association is a state political party in Assam, India. Asom Gana Parishad was formed after six-year-long Assam Movement, which was led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP) on the issue to free Assam of several million unlawful infiltrators from across the borders. Since many years, Assam populace were struggling on this issue and demanding to take initiative against the foreign infiltrators who had entered the state through the permeable border, mainly from Bangladesh and grabbed huge areas of the state. These illegal agents endangered the economic, political, social and cultural survival of the native people of the state. The Asom Gana Parishad was established after the momentous Assam agreement of 1985 when Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was chosen as the youngest chief minister of the country. The AGP has formed government twice from 1985 to 1989 and from 1996 to 2001. Politcal symbol of this party is elephant.

The party divided with former Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, forming the Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive), but rearranged on 14 October 2008 at Golaghat. The party has one MP in the Lok Sabha and also one MP in the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha MP is Joseph Toppo from the prestigious Tezpur Parliamentary Constituency. The success of Asom Gana Parishad party in Assam's political scenario gave boost to such local forces in the neighbouring states.

Leaders of party

Prafulla kumar mahanta is the president of party. He led one of the most powerful mass movements in India which was six years long anti-foreigners movement in Assam from 1979 to 1985. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta went on to become the youngest ever Chief Minister in India at the age of 33, heading the first Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) government in Assam. He also headed the second AGP-led government in 1996. Atul bora is working president of party. Vice presidents are Thaneswar boro, Pulakesh Baruah, Dr. Alaka Sarma, Devid Ledzer, Bhupen Roy and Ratneswar Rai. General secretaries are Pradip Hazarika, Keshav Mahanta, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Joseph Toppo, Durga Das Boro, Dr. Kamalakant Kalita and Utpal Dutta.

Currently, Asom Gana Parishad is not in power in Assam but the views and philosophy of party are great and it must be followed by ruling party. Asom Gana Parishad realized the feeling of the people better than any other national party in Assam. The AGP has no high command like the Congress or the BJP other than the people themselves. The leaders in the party have liberty to make decision on political issues.

Asom Gana Parishad party is committed to protect its own national individuality and honesty amidst diversity in the state of Assam, the land of diverse ethnic communities and multifarious culture with secular, autonomous and socialistic viewpoint, developing knowledge, science, technology, art and culture and establishing a resourceful state of Assam within the Indian union assuring political, social and cultural development. Party maintains decorum of labour among men and women and an egalitarian society free of any exploitation, enhancing well integrated agriculture and industrial development. The Asom Gana Parishad party is intended to establish Assam as powerful state with political egalitarianism, economic progress and social justice within the Indian union through decentralization of democratic system by modifying the Indian Constitution with federal structure
