About Bahujan samaj party

    Bahujan samaj party History

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is one of the national political parties in India. Since its establishment, the BSP represents the political aspirations of the downtrodden and oppressed sections of Indian society. The BSP party's focus is on the segments of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes. In addition it also champion the cause of the minority groups.

The BSP is ardent follower of the ideology propounded by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who belonged to the Scheduled Castes and hailed as the architect of the Indian Constitutions. BSP's political symbol is Elephant. In the 15thLok Sabha the party have 21 members, making it the 4th-largest party in the Lok Sabha.

The BSP was established in 1984 by Dalit leader Kanshi Ram. Ms Mayawati succeeded him in around 2003.The party is well entrenched in the Uttar Pradesh. In 1993, BSP formed a coalition with Samajwadi Party in UP, but later it withdrew support. Mayawati briefly became Chief Minister in 1995 and again in 1997, then from 2002 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2012.

The BSP was established in 1984 by Dalit leader Kanshi Ram. Ms Mayawati succeeded him in around 2003.The party is well entrenched in the Uttar Pradesh. In 1993, BSP formed a coalition with Samajwadi Party in UP, but later it withdrew support. Mayawati briefly became Chief Minister in 1995 and again in 1997, then from 2002 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2012.

Currently, BSP is the third largest national party in India. The party's major growth has been seen in 1980s. This concluded into the full-fledged Dalit declaration in 1990s. The BSP is known for playing power politics at the state and national levels. The BSP brought an exemplary change in the Dalit empowerment. The BSP changed the mind of Dalit populace through shielding their identity, advancing new vision, shattering social myths, and bringing them in the political mainstream. BSP is hailed as Dalit representative and the most dominant players in Indian politics.

The BSP has now extended its base and upper caste people who are allowed to join the party. The Upper caste – Dalit relationship in Uttar Pradesh is just a political adjustment that has little bearing on social relationship between the communities.

Top leaders of Leaders of BahujanSamaj Party:

Mayawati is the National President of the BSP. She propagates the ideology and objectives of the party. Mayawati holds radical beliefs of social and economic empowerment of the lower and backward castes. She is great supporter of social justice and legal rights of the Dalits.

Another leader of BSP is Satish Chandra Mishra, a lawyer and All-India General Secretary of the party. He was a part of Mayawati's Cabinet in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. Suresh Mane, is the National General Secretary of the bsp. He is the president of the Mumbai Port Trust SC, ST and OBC Employee's Welfare Association. He is the founder president of the Bahujan Municipal Kamgar Union.

Philosophy of Party

BahujanSamaj Party entered into politics for establishing an "independent Dalit political leadership" instead of a "dependent Dalit political leadership". Kanshi Ram's first political party, namely, Dalit Shoshit SamajShangarsh Samiti (DS-4), had comprehensive ideas for the rights of the Dalits and through his actions; he made immense impact on Dalits. Kanshi Ram produced an 'independent Dalit political leadership' in a party that was led and subjugated by the Dalits with a self-determining program.

The belief of the BSP is social transformation and economic emancipation of the Bahujan Samaj. It includes the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, the Other Backward Classes and other religious Minority groups such as Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Parsis and Buddhists. These groups cover approximately 85 per cent of the total population in India.

The BSP desires to sound the death-knell to the "Manuwadi social system" based on the 'Varna.' It aspires to form an egalitarian social system where each person is treated as equal.

The BSP affirms that "the chief aim and objective of the party is to work as a revolutionary social and economic movement of change with a view to realize, in practical terms, the supreme principles of universal justice, liberty, equality and fraternity enunciated in the Constitution of India".

The BSP desires to end exploitation of the poorer sections and inhibition of the deprived through social and economic transformation and its political activity and contribution in governance as a mechanism to bring considerable change in the society.

The BSP's main achievements have been with reference to the governance of Uttar Pradesh. BSP introduced numerous welfare schemes in UP for the women, disabled persons and members of religious minorities. BSP has amended the 'zamindari kanoon' or the rules of the patriarchal landed property of the zamindars to benefit the farmers, women, labourers and others.

Some of the remarkable schemes by the BSP are 'Uttar Pradesh Mukhyamantri Mahamaya Gharib Arthik Madad Yojna', 'Savitribai Phule Shikhsha MadadYojna', 'Mahamaya Garib Balika Ashirwad Yojna', 'Dr.Ambedkar Gram Sabha SamagraVikasYojna', 'Manyawar Shri KanshiramJi Shehri Garib AwasYojna' and others.

These schemes are very advantageous to the families of the Below Poverty Line. They get free education, housing and other assistance. More appreciably, the BSP has fulfilled the needs of members of the lower-castes belonging to various professions such as lawyers, doctors, and teachers. The BSP also took interest in infrastructure development and has made major contributions to the infrastructure, maintenance of law and order in UP, medical and health facilities to the people. In addition to it rural and urban development plans.

The main objective of BSP's development strategies is; "Sarvajan Hitay- Sarvajan Sukhay" or the peace and wealth of every member of the deprived and poor section of the society. With the initiation of BSP's policies and progrmmes the condition of Dalit groups has improved a lot. But still a lot needs to be done in this direction .

Regarding 2014 elections, it is learnt that BSP will contest alone this election and is not interested to make alliance with other party.
