About Communist Party of India

    Communist Party of India History

Communist PartyThe Communist Party of India espouses the cause of the working class in India. CPI was a part of the freedom struggle that envisaged a socialist India. Its political symbol is ears of corn &sickle

The CPI was established on 25 December 1925 at the Party's first conference in Kanpur. The prominent members who founded this party were M.N.Roy, Abani Mukherjee, and Evelyn Trent Roy wife of M.N. Roy, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Siddiqui and others.

During the 1920s and in 1930s the party was poorly organized. In the year of 1934, the main offices of the Communist Party of India were located in Bombay, Calcutta and Punjab. After that party expanded its activities to Madras. A group of Andhra and Tamil students, amongst them P. Sundarayya, were recruited to the CPI by Amir Hyder Khan. The party was reorganized in 1933, after the communist leaders from the Meerut trials were released. A central committee of the party was formed and in 1934. There after CPI was accepted as the Indian section of the Communist International.

Top leaders of party

TS.Sudhakar Reddy is the General Secretary of CPI. He succeeded A. B Bardhan in 2012. He is from Hyderabad and MP from Nalgonda constituency of Andhra Pradesh.

A.B. Bardhan is one of the oldest party members of the CPI. He belongs to Nagpur. He succeeded Indrajit Gupta as the General Secretary of the party in 1996. Dr. M. Nara Singh is National Executive Member and is the current State Secretary of the Manipur branch of the CPI. He was previous minister in the government of Manipur. Gurudas Dasgupta is a prominent leader of the CPI. He is an MP in the 15th Lok Sabha. D. Raja is National Secretary of CPI.

Ideologies of the party

The CPI is trying to address issues such as social equality for women, adult franchise, and nationalization of private-owned enterprise. It supports issues like nationalization, land reforms, social justice for the untouchables, democratic rights of organizations, right to protest through demonstrations and strikes.

The main motto of the party 'People's Democracy' was substituted by 'National Democracy' in 1951. In 1957, CPI won the assembly elections in Kerala and surprized the nation. But in 1964, CPI split due to some ideological differences within the party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was formed.

The CPI was in power in Kerala during 1970-77, with the backing of Congress party. CPI also has been part of the Left Front government in West Bengal, Tripura and intermittently in Kerala since last 20 years. In Tamil Nadu, CPI has alliance with the Progressive Democratic Alliance.

The CPI, as part of the Left Front has been part of the Congress-led UPA government. The party withdrew support from the Congress when it went ahead with the nuclear energy cooperation programme with the United States. CPI believes that activities of the present UPA government, such as disinvestment of profit making PSUs, introducing FDIs in finance sector and MNCs in retail sector are anti-people strategies.

Political success of party

The CPI has done good work for the people of Manipur and Tripura where it is part of the Left Front, in Kerala as part of the Left Democratic Front and in Tamil Nadu, as part of the Progressive Democratic Alliance.

The CPI also has many mass organizations such as All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), All India Youth Federation (AIYF), peasant and agricultural workers' organizations such as All India Kisan Sabha and Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union, National Federation of Indian Women. Its student wing, the AISF or All India Students Federation.

All these organizations are doing exemplary work among the working class people of the country and espousing the objectives of the party that is democratic centralism.
