About Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

    Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam History

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party is a well-established regional party in Tamil Nadu. The Dravidian party was formed by C. N. Annadurai after breaking away from the Dravidar Kazhagam. Its predecessor was Justice Party of India under the leadership of Periyar. DMK since 1969 is guided by M Karunanidhi, who has been the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu several times. The party's election symbol is the Rising Sun and its flag consist of red and black colour.

Since the establishment of DMK, the party was in favour of separate independent state for the Dravidians. Annadurai wanted a separate Dravida Nadu but changed its stand after the Chinese attack in 1962. DMK rose to fame in 1962 Assembly elections winning 50 seats. It came to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967 with 138 seats. Its anti-Hindi agitations in 1965 enforced the central government to discard its efforts to compel Hindi as the only official language. In 1974, the DMK government brought in a decree in the Assembly urging the Centre to agree to the Rajamannar Committee's recommendations and modify the Constitution to overlay the emphasis for a proper federal system in India.

DMK have flagged a range of populist proposals for the human development. The party has devised welfare schemes such as maternity help, subsidized public transport and educational funding and several free bees like colour televisions, free laptops, grinder, mixer and fans. Many of them are touted as vote bank politics.

Ideology of party

DMK's believes in Duty, Dignity and Discipline. The party strive to defend the democratic rights of people, establish a society free from exploitation, envisages a society based on rationalism, eliminate poverty; promote Tamil language and culture, federalism and socialism etc.

The main goals of DMK is social reforms such as ending communalism , eradicating caste distinction, empowerment of women, ending Brahmin supremacy, ending north Indians dominance , resistance to Hindi as India's official language, social justice through reservation for the disadvantaged in education and employment.

The DMK also initiated Tamil prayers (archanas) in temples in the place of Sanskrit prayers. This approach swelled support of the non-Brahman Saivites in Tamil Nadu. The DMK has strong base in urban sections and rural voters. Large amount of DMK support comes from the OBCs category.

DMK has courted many controversies. Karunanidhi government was accused in 1976 of possible secession and dishonesty and Indira Gandhi sacked his government.

The DMK government was also charged by the Sarkaria commission for corruption in allotting tenders for the Veeranam project.

The provisional report of Justice Jain Commission, which was investigating the Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case, revealed that Karunanidhi assisted the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam but in its final report, there were no such mention.

DMK government had to take the flake when some of its members were blamed for 2G Spectrum scam highlighted in 2010. A case was filed against DMK member and Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja. Further, Karunanidhi's daughter MK Kanimozhi was arrested in 2011for alleged bribe in 2G Scam.

None the less DMK has a very strong electoral base and is rotating power after every five years with its arch rival AIADMK.
