The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) is one of the dominant state parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Prof. Bhim Singh, who was primarily a member of the Congress and represented the party as an MLA in the J&K State Legislative Assembly had established this party. Bhim Singh had some disagreement with congress party over the issues of protecting the economic, social and political interests of the people of the state therefore he quitted from Congress and formed separate party. The party was officially formed on 23rd March 1982. The Election Symbol of the JKNPP, as accepted by the Election Commission of India, is the "Bicycle".

Top leaders of party:

The present President of the JKNPP is Balwant Singh Mankotia. He is a two-time MLA in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He is a Human Rights activist and lawyer by profession. Harsh Dev Singh is Chairman of JKNPP. He is the nephew of Prof. Bhim Singh and lawyer by profession. Balwant Singh Mankotia is President of JKNPP and a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, representing the Udhampur constituency.

JKNPP is committed to work for overall progress and development of the various communities of the state. Party's major objective is to create a real democracy through ultimate revolution. The Panthers Party is dedicated to promote and make stronger the secular bonds, democratic system so that all people irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, region and social status shall live in peace and harmony so that all people get their fundamental rights and freedom of expression.

Success of party in political arena:

The JKNPP is a regional political party and deeply involved in political movement. The JKNPP appreciably maintained the Numbedari-Chowkidari system from Congress-JKNC alliance. The Numbedars and Chowkidars who could not get salaries, resumed their jobs. During 1996, daring step was taken by Bhim Singh-led JKNPP which moved the Supreme Court to hold elections in the militancy-torn Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Election Commission of India was convinced to carry out elections in the state with great efforts of JKNPP. The JKNPP continually struggle for the reservation of Scheduled Tribe status for the Paharis in the state, who inhabit the regions from Rajouri to Kupwara. Bhim Singh also took major initiative to release thousands of political prisoners through public interest litigations moved in the Supreme Court of India as well as the High Court. The efforts of the JKNPP resulted in the insertion of Dogri language in the 8th Schedule. The Women's Wing of the Panthers Party has been intensely struggling to defend women from domestic violence in the state of J&K. The JKNPP made possible to get funds from the Union government, which protects the refugees from Pakistan as well as for the welfare of the Border migrants entering the state. Currently, the JKNPP is the main opposition party to the ruling JKNC that had significant performance in the 2009 state elections.
