The JMM always ask for social and economic justice for the people of the state. The Election Symbol of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, accepted by the Election Commission of India, is "Bow and Arrow". This symbol indicated the fighting spirit of the party members of the Jharkhandto protect the terrible state of the inhabitants. The party symbol portrays its philosophy of regional, ethnic and linguistic elitism, and its fanaticismfor enemies of the majority of the population such as feudal landlords, who tyrannize the peasants and farmers with heavy burdens of levies. Party's main goal is to develop healthy society in that there is system of equality, fraternity, and an anti-capitalist financial and political system.

After the MPC's defeat in 1984, Party served as a strong opposition in the next 2 decades. In the 1998 assembly elections, it won 12 seats. However, in the 2003 elections, the party won only 3 seats, a number which fell to 2 in the 2008 elections and 1 in 2013. The MPC is still the third major party in Mizoram, but is far surpassed by its competitors, the Mizo National Front and Indian National Congress.

The party was formally established on the birthday of Birsa Munda, the 19th century tribal soldier of Jharkhand, who fought against the British rule in present-day Jharkhand. In 2005 Jharkhand state assembly elections, the JMM took second place and received 17 of the 81 seats. It supports the government of Independent Chief Minister Madhu Koda which was formed in 2006. It took active part of the United Progressive Alliance. It has had controversies when its MPs were involved in the corruption scam during the Rao Government and the fiasco in early 2005 about the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. News reports revealed that one of its MPs was assassinated by Naxalites. Currently, it has left the coalition with Bharatiya Janata Party to form the government in Jharkhand. Presently, Hemant Soren is the CM of Jharkhand. Sibu Soren is the party President of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and is MP from Dumka. C.P.Singh is the Speaker of Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha from BJP Party.

The party got its political and social motivation from the ground-breakingprinciples and ethics of Birsa Munda who was the 19th century tribal combatant. He continually opposed to the British rule in the nation and achieved successes. The "do or die" spirit of Munda is inculcated in every member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The party's struggleto develop an anti-capitalistic, anti-imperialistic political system has earned it praises in the state of Jharkhand and all over the country.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had collation with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for a short period and then JMM proved its loyalty to the United Progressive Alliance and continues to support it even today. The JMM has good performance in the assembly elections. While in the 2005 Jharkhand polls, the party got 17 out of the 81 assembly constituencies, coming second in the state, in the immediate next elections, the JMM witnessed a far-reachingtriumph and formed the current government in the state in alliance with the Congress.
