Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) is one of the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. It is recognized as a regional party by the election commission.

    Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

INCMarumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) is one of the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. It is recognized as a regional party by the election commission. MDMK was formed in 1994 by V.Gopalswamy a.k.a Vaiko, who earlier belonged to the DMK. Vaiko has an impressive political record and courted custody several times. He was apprehended under MISA during emergency. He is an ardent supporter of Srilankan Tamils' cause. He was detained under the Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act (POTA) in 2002.

MDMK was a significant member of the NDA during 1998-2004. Currently the MDMK has one member in the 15thLok Sabha. Its election symbol is "Top".

Prominent leaders of MDMK

V.Gopalswamy a.k.a Vaiko, is the President and General Secretary of MDMK. Ganeshamurthi is another leader of the MDMK. He represents the Erode constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha. Pon Muthuramalingam is deputy Chairman of MDMK and Deputy Secretary of the party in Madurai. Another leader of the party is M. Kannappan who is the Treasurer of MDMK.

Ideology of MDMK

MDMK works for the Social justice of Tamil people. The party has Centre-Left political position. MDMK adheres to fight for Tamil Nationalism.



Political actions of the party

The MDMK has many organizations under its banner like Marumalarchi Labour Front (MLF). The MLF has been successful in getting agricultural loans at lesser interest rates for the peasants and free electricity is supplied for them.

The MDMK runs a Tamil daily newspaper Sangoli that raises the voice of the marginalized sections of the society.

Vaiko has undertaken several foot walks to highlight the protest agenda of his party. He walked from Kanyakumari to Chennai when he established MDMK in 1994. During his walk he talked about the Dravidian ideology that is being neglected by other such parties.

The MDMK is opposed to imposition of Hindi in the Tamil Nadu. Vaiko had participated in anti Hindi agitation and rose his voice against making Hindi the official language in Tamil Nadu.

MDMK highlights the cause of Tamil language because it is one of the most ancient languages in the country. The party wants reservations for the socially weaker communities as it feels it may lead to social justice.

The MDMK considers that the rivers of Kerala should be re-directed to Tamil Nadu through canals and tunnels, so that irrigation in the state can be carried out without water shortage.

2014 General Election: On the occasion of 105thbirth anniversary of former Chief Minister late C.N. Annadurai, MDK president Vaiko said the party is reinvigorating after betrayals that was witnessed in the last elections.

MDMK has decided to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP with the agenda of overthrowing the corrupt Congress-led UPA government.
