About Rashtriya Janata Dal

   Rashtriya Janata Dal History

The Rashtriya Janata Dal, briefly recognized as RJD is a political party in India. It has mass voters in the state of Bihar. The party was established in 1997 by Laloo Prasad Yadav. The party usually focuses on Yadavs and Muslims, two large and comparatively politically active sections of Bihar's population. Rashtriya Janata Dal locates itself in the communal ambitions of people and communities determined to develop a society that is based on the grounds of social justice and secularism. The Election Symbol of RJD, accepted by the Election Commission, is a hurricane lamp.

This symbol has immense impetus in social scenario as it represents light, of enlightenment, of literacy and of progress.

Historical review of party:

The Rashtriya Janata Dal exceeded from regional boundaries and gained the status of national party in 2008, following its performance in north-eastern states. In March 1998 national elections, RJD grabbed 17 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar but could not succeed in any other state. Afterwards, the party made coalition with Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and represented as an anti-BJP secular coalition but this alliance also did not gain success. In the October 1999 elections, RJD contested the election in coalition with Congress but lost 10 Lok Sabha seats that included the seat of Lalu Prasad Yadav. In the 2000 state elections, however, it performed unpredictably well and emerged as a triumphant party with a majority of the seats in the state assembly. This trend continued and party electoral fortunes shined during this period. The party won 21 Lok Sabha seats in the 2004 elections that it fought in alliance with Congress. But this upward trend dropped in very next year and the party had to turn down power in the 2005 state elections after winning only 75 seats. In the state elections held that year, none of the party won enough seats to form a government. RJD continued to perform in downward trend and lost 21 seats. In the general election of April-May 2009, the RJD had a terrible result as party got only 4 seats. After the elections in February 2005, the state of Bihar came under President's Rule through Governor of Bihar Sardar Buta Singh. Since then, a new election has brought the NDA to power in the state. The RJD lost its fame and could not be a member of India's governing coalition led by the Congress Party.

Prominent Leaders of RJD:

The leaders of the RJD are also their national representatives and executives. Lalu Prasad Yadav is President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal and chosen as a Member of Parliament to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Saran constituency in Bihar, Lalu Prasad has been one the most famous Railway Ministers of the UPA government in India from 2004 to 2009. He ruled as the Chief Minister of Bihar for two terms. Lalu is recognized for his simple characteristic, his ability to influence masses. He has received entry into the Limca Book of Records for being the longest-serving president of any political party. He was invited for lectures to world-class universities like Harvard and other Ivy League institutes in the USA, as well as sacred by different celebrities from the world of Bollywood. The Rashtriya Janata Dal is encouraged from Gandhian thoughts as well as follows the great tradition of the socialist leaders. Party is determined to fight against communalism in any form. The party considers that Satyagraha/ non-violent resistance is basic right of people of India. Narayan. Catchphrase for RJD is "Do or Die" spirit that means to fight against cruelty of the poor and awkward sections of the society. The RJDs huge success in Bihar is due to its adoption of the Gandhian values of non-violent resistance to cast and communalism of any form. RJD has appeared as an active political party with a contemporary and progressive viewpoint and its history is integrally related to the principles of secularism, social justice and an inclusive development for all.

Success and political activities of party:

Rashtriya Janata Dal emerged as a national political party and as a regional party. During its rule, the RJD has made numerous noteworthy contributions to the political arena of the country. One of the prime frontal organizations of the RJD is its student wing, called the Yuva RJD.
