About United Democratic Party

   United Democratic Party History

United Democratic Party Party a regional political party in India and it had supremacy in the state of Goa, which is a Christian-dominated state. The MGP got huge backing from the Christian residents of Goa. This party had dissimilar ideologies from United Goans Party, which were oldest parties in the state of Goa. The United Democratic Party was evolved after freedom from Portuguese colonization of Goa in 1961. After Goa achieved independence in 1961, the United Democratic Party Party took charge in the state, ruling Goa from 1963 when the first Assembly elections to the state were held, till 1979 when it was expelled due to some imperfections. The party operates on a Centre political position. The election symbol of this political party is Lion. The party has more dominance among non-Brahmin Hindus. This group makes huge number and poor section of the Goan society, and was particularly disadvantaged during Portuguese rule in Goa. It held on to power in spite of being affected by some defections, defeating the other contenders for power, mainly the United Goans Party and afterwards the Congress party.

It was initiated by E. K. Mawlong in 1997. The United Democratic Party was established when the three regional parties in the state, namely The Hill State People's Democratic Party, the Hill People Union and The Public Demand Implementation Convention joined together to develop single political association, the United Democratic Party. The UDP has no member of parliament either in the Lok Sabha or in the Rajya Sabha. The party was not able to grab any seat in the Lower House of Parliament in the 2009 general elections. At present, the UDP is the third-largest political party in Meghalaya, after the ruling Indian National Congress and the second largest political party, the Nationalist Congress Party.

The United Democratic Party has mission of service to all through impartial distribution of public resources and opportunities, underpinned by good economic policies that make certain financial strength, sustainable growth, and huge development of physical and social infrastructure. The major objectives of the party are to protect the rights, justice, liberties and progress of the tribal group and for their growth according to their status.

Party is committed to expand the State for the development and benefit of the people and justice to all as assured by the Constitution of India. Party's aim is to extend its services for quick accomplishment of Universal Education and thorough advanced learning in contemporary technologies and skills of the tribal people, in particular, and of the State, in general and finally party provide safety and protect the identity of the tribal people. Party's major mission is to protect and enhance the environment and to preserve the forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife. UDP has aim to make certain the territorial uprightness of Meghalaya and re-establish the State to the equitable areas and those nearby areas mainly occupied by the tribal people and ethnically related to Meghalaya. Party strongly promotes character, probity, transparency, accountability, discipline and fairness in the conduct of public affairs.

Prominent leaders of The United Democratic Party: Dean Barrow is the Prime leader and chief of the United Democratic Party. He has represented the UDP in the Queens Square Electoral Division since 1984, winning six consecutive general elections. Gaspar Vega, is the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment. He is also the representative for the Orange Walk North Electoral Division. Patrick Faber is the Minister of Education and Youth, and also serves as the UDP's National Party Chairperson.

Party has got political success in diverse arena. Party has made noteworthy improvements in health care including no maternal deaths in 2011. It worked hard to reduce Mortgage interest rates from 14% to 8% and there is considerable increase in vegetable production through investment in irrigation and greenhouses. UDP has implemented the Reform Agenda by legislation the recall mechanism for chosen officials and facilitate prosecution under an unjust enrichment law.

Party has done major enhancement in National Emergency Response, provide relief to thousands of residents and worked in major agricultural sectors following major weather disturbances. The YPF, Youths Progressing for the Future of the United Democratic Party has main objective to notify, educate and promote youths to join the UDP for betterment of people and to support the party for triumph in all elections. The YPF has reputable associations in each constituency committee all over the country. This is mainly established to enhance the party, recognizing the talent of leaders and developing leaders to make the party strong and vivacious.

The UDP has key role in demanding the Governor's interference to maintain the law-and-order issues in the Congress-ruled government in Meghalaya. Political social disturbances are increased in the state and the Congress government does not take initiative to shield populace of state. Therefore the UDP has demanded instant Governor Intervention to stop massacre in state and reinstate peace and harmony.

News reports indicated that Party has released manifesto in February 2014 to set up village courts in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region of the State to improve the administration and justice for the people, besides fighting corruption and promoting peace. The party will make every effort to improve the delivery of justice in the different courts of the council. The UDP is contesting 29 seats in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and 18 seats out of 29 in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
